What’s in YOUR cupboard?

“Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat.
Please put a penny in the old man’s hat.
If you haven’t got a penny, a ha’ penny will do.
If you haven’t got a ha’ penny, then God bless you.”

-Christmas Is Coming (Traditional)

And so we come to the winding down of the year.  Winter: the place where the White Giant sleeps.  On our path around the Medicine Wheel we find ourselves in the direction of the North.  Here we remember our ancestors.  Here we honor the White Buffalo.  And here we receive the spiritual nourishment of the labors of our year.

What have you gathered and put aside to sustain you through these long, cold nights of introspection? Will your table be spread with the bounty of love?  Or will you find yourself scratching the cupboards for a few cold scraps of fear? Ultimately the choice is yours – and no decision is final.  For just as the Earth hides Her face beneath a blanket of white, so to will She turn Her face to the sun when that same blanket is pulled back a few short months from now.

This is not the time for empty regrets.  It is instead a time to face with open eyes and open heart the actions of the past.  If these actions have sprung from a place of love, accept their consequences humbly and with gratitude.  If  these actions have sprung from a place of  fear, be gentle and compassionate with yourself.  Learn from this,  and thank the Great Mystery for loving you enough to offer you this lesson.  Carry it with you  that you may share it with others who may be in need of it.

Whatever your belief, whatever face you place upon your Maker, whatever name you use to call upon Him or Her, I wish you love and happiness at this closing of the year.  May your journey along this good Red Road be gentle enough that you may find whatever warms your heart – yet difficult enough that you may know the hidden strength you have at your command.

May we walk together joyfully as one.  May our actions be always and only for the greatest good of all our relations. . .
